Artist Jason Starr
BIOGRAPHY
Jason Starr is an award-winning photographer living and working in San Francisco. He was recently named an artist-in-residence by Creators Equity Foundation, and has been awarded an Art in Public Places certificate by the San Francisco Art Commission. He holds a degree in liberal arts and has over twenty years of experience in photography.
Jason has been a member of City Art Gallery since 2005.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am fascinated by reflections.
Each ray of light touching and being touched by intermediary surfaces - like stones skipping across a river, or the gentle kisses of a lover.
Sometimes interaction is avoided - the almost perfect mirrors and lenses of a camera obsessively conceal themselves from view. Often wave and substance subtly interact- a mirror on the wall, at first a cool reflection, expands to reflect the wisdom of musty corners, mercury distortions and the cracks of time.
Occasionally the exchange is so strong - as in water or twisted metal - that it will reinvent the very substance of the image,
teasing and tightening, warping and folding light to match its own desire.
As you go deeper, it is not just the subject that is important, but everything between it and the viewer. Not only reflective surfaces, but air, glass, eyes, and even more hidden things - unseen surfaces, nerves, memories - all add and subtract to the view.
Most viewers seek and question the topography of the third dimension. A few also seek to understand the additional and more mysterious layers. When my photographs are most successful, they will not only show beauty, but also offer deeper enigmas.
